Note : 
(i) This Question Paper consists of two Sections, viz., ‘A’ and ‘B’.
(ii) All the questions from Section ‘A’ are com pulsory.
(iii) Section ‘B’ has two options. Candidates are required to attempt questions from one option only.
(iv) Marks are indicated against each question.

SECTION – A

Q.1. Read the following extracts carefully and answer the questions that follow :
(a) It seems that Nan-kaka (as I call him), who had come to see me in hospital on my first day in this world, noticed a little hole near the top of my left ear lobe. The next day he came again and picked up the baby lying on the crib next to my mother. To his utter horror, he discovered that the baby did not have the hole on the left ear lobe. A frantic search of all the cribs in the hospital followed, and I was eventually located sleeping blissfully beside a fisherwoman, totally oblivious of the commotion I had caused ! The mix-up, it appears, followed after the babies had been given their bath.
(i) What did Nan-kaka notice when he came to see the baby (the speaker) in hospital? 1

At night it was his duty to see that the lamp was burning, and that the overland mail passed through safely. “Shall I come too, Father?” asked Tembu sleepily, still lying in a huddle in a corner of the hut.

The kajal around her large almond-shaped eyes formed a neat line. She folded her hands over her breast, almost touching the small gold pendant of her delicate necklace.
(i) Write one sentence that aptly describes Aradhana’s personality. 1
(ii) Which expressions in the passage suggest that Aradhana was tastefully dressed up?
(iii) Pick out the expressions which hint that Aradhana could be a dancer.
(iv) Which words in the passage mean the same as the following? 
‘small and having a beautiful shape’ ; ‘a piece of jewellery that is worn around one’s neck on a chain’.

A husband and wife who lived their lives with immense courage are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Nobel laureate in peace, and Mrs. Coretta Scott King—both leaders of the struggle for equal rights for African-Americans.
As his most trusted comrade, Mrs. King worked with her husband to forge the history of this great human rights movement. The American Civil Rights Movement faced many trials and adversities. It was common for its leaders to have their lives threatened by those hostile to their activities. Mrs. King and her children narrowly escaped death when a bomb was thrown into their home.
Despite such dangers and threats, however, Mrs. King’s spirit remained firm and undaunted. She was resolved to fight alongside her husband to the very end.

There are many different kinds of friendships. Some friendships last a lifetime. But there are also friendships that only endure for a certain time—it might be twenty years, five years or one year. Sometimes your feelings may not change, but the other person’s do. You don’t have to be obsessed with the idea that friendship must last a lifetime. A friendship still has meaning even if it only lasts a short while. The main thing is that you respond with sincerity to each encounte
Your classmates are your peers, they are the people you will graduate with, so I hope you can truly enjoy the time you spend with them, without worrying how long your friendship will last. There is an anecdote I would like to share.

Three men were each engaged in moving a load of bricks from one place to another.

Someone asked the first man, “What are you doing?”

The person replied, “Oh, I’m just carrying these bricks over there.”

In response to the same question, the second person replied, “I’m going to build a wall with these bricks.”

The third person said, “I’m building a palace. That’s why I’m carrying these bricks over one at a time.”

The person doing the questioning marvelled at how there was such diversity of thought among people who were apparently all engaged in the same activity. He mused, “Only the third person is exerting himself with the pride that he is building a palace. Obviously for him, performing his work is identical to building the ‘palace’ of his own life.”

Q.8. Read the passage given below and make a summary in about 100 words : 5
A father was teaching his son languages. Day in, day out, they would study together. The boy was of an age when he wanted to be out playing with his friends and having fun. One day he had enough, and shouted, “I’m sick of studying !”
Maybe some of you have felt the same way.
His mother, however, didn’t fly off the handle and start scolding him when he said this. This is an important point. She proceeded to tell him gently and persuasively why it was important to study. “Even if we leave you an
inheritance, if you are unlucky, it can vanish in an instance”, she pointed out. “But sound knowledge and learning are not like that. They stay with you until you die.”
Abdullah is the boy’s name. He lived up to his mother’s expectations and went on to become a famous language teacher.

The words of this mother are truly profound. They are words of wisdom and philosophy reflecting a deep understanding and insight.

For me, those years were shadowed by war. I was seventeen when the war ended. Because of the tubercular condition of my lungs, I had left the munitions factory where I had earlier been assigned to work, and was resting at home. Around May of 1945, I began getting my belongings together in preparation for a move to the country which, it was hoped, would help my condition. But just at that time there was a large-scale air raid on Tokyo, and my belongings, our house, and everything else burned up. The future looked completely black for me.
How hateful war is ! Regardless of what excuses men may offer, they must once and for all cease this senseless killing.
